1 Day Bladesmithing Experience
There is nothing quite like hand-forging your own knife. This introductory one-day class, led by Neels van den Berg, Shawn Softley, Erin Peacock and Owen Louw, will teach you how to hand-forge a basic knife using traditional methods, with step-by-step instruction. The class is open to students of all skill levels, including those with no prior experience in bladesmithing.
The class focuses on the fundamentals of forging, grinding, and heat-treating a blade. The knife will be forged from SAE5160, a medium carbon spring steel perfect for the intended application. During the class, students will be guided through the process of forging the knife blade to shape, basic flat grinding, heat treating - hardening and tempering, and blade finishing and sharpening.
The class covers the safety precautions that must be taken when working with high-carbon steel and the tools and equipment used in bladesmithing. Students will learn about the history of bladesmithing and the different types of blades and knives that are made by bladesmiths, as well as the basic principles of blade design, such as blade geometry, edge angles, and balance.

By the end of the class, students will have the opportunity to take home a single hand-forged knife, which is the outcome of the class (No handle scales and no sheath). Class notes are provided in the form of the instructor's Bladesmithing 101 tutorial uploaded to his YouTube channel, which is free to access.
This class is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning about the art and science of bladesmithing. It's a hands-on class that provides a great introduction to the field, and will give you a taste of the process and the skills required to be a bladesmith. You will have the opportunity to learn from a master of the craft, and gain a solid foundation in the basics of bladesmithing.

Start Time:
- Class starts 7:45am and finishes before 6pm.
- Please allow for 15min extra travel time as the last 7.5km is a dirt road in a Nature Reserve with a speed limit of 40km/h.

Just had to share - Mitch had an unforgettable experience at Black Dragon Forge! He thoroughly enjoyed every step of making his own knife, from shaping the steel to putting the finishing touches. The excitement was real, and the end result is a stunning blade - especially impressive for his very first attempt. Well done, Mitch! #BlackDragonForge #FirstBlade #ForgedByMitch

I sent my husband and son. My husband says on the on the outside he thought it might be questionable. But when the walked in to the forge their jaws dropped at the setup. He can not stop telling people how excellent the setup is and how professional the team is. They went about a week ago and ca not stop talking about their experience , how much they learnt , how much fun they had. How supportive the Black Dragon Forge staff are. My husband hasn’t smile like that for years. My son now just wants to build a forge . I cannot thank Neels and his team enough. This is well worth it. I am telling everyone I know that is looking for a gift or just something out of the ordinary to do about the Black Dragon Forge . Thank you very much. Im sure you guys will see is again some time soon

Spending a day at Black Dragon Forge was far more than we expected. it was humbling, inspiring, and deeply memorable. My partner and I went together, and from the moment we stepped into the forge, we were welcomed into a space that was warm, inclusive, and rich with tradition. This isn’t just a “men’s event” - it’s an experience for anyone curious about the timeless art of bladesmithing. The team at Black Dragon Forge is phenomenal. Patient, passionate, and incredibly skilled, they guided us through every step of the process with genuine enthusiasm and care. You’re not just making a knife, you’re crafting a story, a memory, something you’ll treasure long after the steel cools. There’s something powerful about shaping metal with your own hands, especially knowing the techniques have changed so little over thousands of years. It gave us a deep appreciation for the craft and the people who keep it alive.

This was perfect for our DIY-loving Dads. The class was well organised, friendly environment and top tier equipment. Had enough assistants to help everyone. Had enough equipment for everyone. You will feel like you're on an episode of "Forged in Fire". 10/10

Thank you for a wonderful experience. I joined with my two sons, and we all had a great time. The course was well run, very instructive, and the extra help given to my youngest was much appreciated. We left with our own knives and some great memories.
What Our Clients Say About Us
I did the knife-making experience at Black Dragon Forge on 12 December 2025, and it was genuinely one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences I have had in a long time. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was relaxed, welcoming, and professional. The team struck the perfect balance between expert guidance and giving you the space to truly do the work yourself. There was no rushing, no pressure, and no shortcuts — just patient instruction, hands-on learning, and a real appreciation for the craft of bladesmithing. What made the experience exceptional was that you don’t simply “watch” or assemble something — you forge, shape, grind, and finish a knife with your own hands. Walking away with a knife that I personally made, knowing every step that went into it, is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just an object; it’s a story and a memory you keep for life. If you are looking for a unique experience, whether for yourself, with friends, or as a gift, I cannot recommend Black Dragon Forge highly enough. "You will leave with a beautifully crafted knife, a deeper respect for the craft, and memories that will stay with you long after the day is over." I would do it again without hesitation and strongly encourage anyone considering it to book — you will not regret it.
